Bird flu (avian influenza): how to spot it and report it –

Report dead wild birds

Call Defra on 03459 33 55 77 if you find:

  • one or more dead birds of prey
  • 3 or more dead gulls or wild waterfowl (swans, geese and ducks)
  • 5 or more dead birds of any species

You do not need to report any other found dead wild birds. Bird flu is not a notifiable disease in wild birds.

If you report a dead wild bird, Defra and APHA may arrange to collect it and test it. This is to help explain where bird flu is spreading in Great Britain and in which types of birds.

Disposing of small numbers of dead garden birds found at your home

If you find small numbers of dead garden birds at your home (domestic residential property only) you can dispose of them in your household or municipal waste bin, or you can bury them.

If you dispose of a dead wild bird with your household or municipal waste, you should:

  1. Pick it up wearing disposable gloves or a plastic bag over your hand.
  2. Put the bird in a plastic bag and tie it. Take care not to contaminate the outside of the bag.
  3. Put the bird in a second (preferably leak proof) plastic bag, along with the gloves or plastic bag you used to pick it up and tie it. Take care not to touch the outside of the gloves with bare hands.
  4. Put it in your outside household or municipal waste bin.
  5. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

If you bury a dead wild bird you should:

  • dig a hole at least 60cm deep to stop animals digging it up
  • not bury it in a plastic bag (if you use a plastic bag to pick the bird up put it in your outside household or municipal waste bin)
  • not bury it near any watercourses or in a place where it could contaminate local water supplies
  • wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water when you’ve finished

East Riding of Yorkshire Community Tree Planting Fund now open for applications

East Riding of Yorkshire Community Tree Planting Fund now open for applications: Humber Forest Launch 1

The 2022 East Riding of Yorkshire Community Tree Planting Fund is now open for applications.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council are welcoming applications for funding, for up to £5,000 through this programme for 2022, for the purposes of creating new areas of native woodland, planting new clusters of native trees, or establishing new individual native standard trees.

There are no restrictions on who can apply to the fund for a grant, and it is envisaged that applications will be received from a range of individuals and groups such as private and public landowners, farmers and land managers, community groups, businesses, community organisations, charities, Town & Parish Councils, schools and faith groups.

As well as the East Riding of Yorkshire Community Tree Planting Fund, Humber Forest offers access to up to 100% funded tree planting.

Humber Forest is the community forest for Hull and East Yorkshire, working in partnership with Hull and East Riding councils, local businesses, community groups, schools and organisations such as the Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission.

There is no application process for Humber Forest. The Humber Forest team works with you to plan the project, complete any checks on your behalf, and, should you want it, works with two charity partners to assist in the delivery of your project, all at no cost to yourselves. It funds hedgerows, woodland and shelter belt planting, and potentially standard tree planting on farms, private land and estates, schools, public and private parks, amenity land, and within private business land. Each site will also receive funding for up to 5 years maintenance of the trees.

There is no upper limit to project size, however the minimum planting size is 0.08 hectares of planting (approximately 200 trees).

The cut-off for applications is 30 September 2022.

For more information on the Humber Forest, please visit www.humberforest,org or contact humber.forest@eastriding.gov.uk

For applications to the East Riding of Yorkshire Community Tree Planting Fund, applications to the fund should be made through the online FlexiGrant system, available at https://eastridingofyorkshirecouncil.flexigrant.com

Both funds are subject to their own criteria.

Please note: although both funds are available to support native tree planting projects, they are not available to applicants who are required to undertaken tree planting work that is required under other obligations (e.g. to implement a planning condition, to fulfil a felling license restocking requirement, etc.). Also, the funds will not normally support work within domestic gardens.

Being in receipt of advice or funding doesn’t mean you’re under any obligation to make your land accessible to the public.

RSPB- Calling local Farmers and landowners.

The RSPB has contacted the Parish Council asking for local farmers and landowners to contact them for those that are interested in helping nature thrive on their land.

The Yorkshire Wolds and Coast is one of the best places for wildlife in teh UK and has huge potential to provide even more homes for important farmland birds, as well as other animals from butterflies and bees to hares and hedgehogs. As a result, RSPB Conservation advisor Chris Tomson is offering free advice and support to anyone in the area who wants to manager their land in a more wildlife-friendly way. As well as advice, the RSPB is also offering farmers in the Yorkshire Wolds and Coast area free farmland bird surveys. These stock takes will show what wildlife makes its home on a farm and, when required repeated at a later date, will reveal how a farmer’s efforts are producing real results for wildlife.

Farmers interested in chatting to Chris about giving nature a home on their land can call him on 07900 164 601 or email him at chris.tomson@rspb.org.uk.

If you have been the victim of any such scams you can report them to the Trading Standards department at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Operation FIDO

The Parish Council is appealing for help in forming a committee to help raise funds to commission a unique WW2 memorial for Carnaby Airfield. The Parish Council has been in talks with a local artist to make a lifesize structure of a Lancaster Bomber. Although still in its infancy we are progressing slowly.  We still need to gain permissions to erect the memorial on land on the airfield.  Providing that we are granted planning permission we will need to raise thousands of pounds to commission the artwork, and the installation of it and car parking facilities will be needed. If you would like to be involved in this fantastic project please contact us. You can contact us at clerk@carnabyparishcouncil.co.uk

Breaking news! – ERYC to change their plans about siting a Gypsy and Traveller Site in Carnaby

Carnaby Parish Council has long waited to hear the good news that the ERYC proposes to changes its plans to site a Gypsy and Traveller Site in the village.  After thousands of objections about the new draft plan, the ERYC are proposing several changes, including the removal of the proposal to site a Gypsy and Traveller Site in Carnaby (CAR20). Peter Naylor – Artist – attends PC meeting to discuss memorial plans

Peter Naylor, the famous artist of 158 Bomber Command memorial fame (Lisset memorial) attended this month’s Parish Council meeting to discuss plans to erect a WW2 memorial on Carnaby Airfield. The plans are ambitious but very exciting. Peter’s idea is to build a full scale, skeletal model of a Lancaster Bomber, and to place it at the end of the runway as if it is just about to land.  The slides that Peter showed are extremely impressive and the memorial would be seen from a distance.  This project is in its infancy and there is a long way to go. We need to obtain planning permission first and, if granted, then to raise some serious money to fund it.  The Parish Council would therefore like some help and support with this project and for a special committee to be formed. If you would like to help in any way please contact either your local Parish Councillor or send us an email.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Door Stoppers – No Cold Calling Scheme

Parish Councillors have been made aware of the increase in “cold calling” from businesses and other organisations. Many residents find this intrusive and annoying and would like it to be stopped. There is a scheme run by ERYC called  “Door Stoppers” that stops “cold callers”. The Parish Council is looking into the scheme. It will need the full cooperation of residents to enable this scheme to sanctioned. More details of this scheme will follow shortly.

Speed Sign

Carnaby is shortly to have a speed sign installed in the village at the north end. This will hopefully slow down the traffic passing through the village, and make it easier to cross the road. The sign has been ordered and should be delivered by the end of August 2013.

11th June 2013

Carnaby Airfield memorial

Carnaby Parish Council is hoping to raise funds to erect a memorial on Carnaby Airfield to commerate the part that this airfield played during World War Two and the lives that it saved. If you have any ideas or thoughts or would like to get involved with this project please contact us. Our email address is carnabyparish@hotmail.co.uk. Thank you.

The Parish Council has been working hard over the last few weeks and months to prevent a proposal by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to site a Gypsy/Traveller site on land at Carnaby Sticks Lane.
